Drug-Target Interaction Database for Neurological Disorders
The Drug-Target Interaction (DTI) Database for Neurological Disorders is a full-stack bioinformatics web application designed to store, manage, and visualize drug-target interaction data associated with various neurological diseases. The primary objective of this project is to provide researchers, students, and healthcare professionals with a centralized platform for exploring relationships between neurological disorders, therapeutic drugs, target proteins, and associated genes.
The application was developed using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, Node.js with Express.js for the backend, and MySQL (Amazon RDS) as the cloud-hosted relational database. The system enables efficient storage and retrieval of large biological datasets while providing a responsive and user-friendly interface.
The database contains comprehensive information on neurological disorders, approved and investigational drugs, target proteins, associated genes, binding affinity values, interaction scores, mechanisms of action, therapeutic indications, and relevant biological annotations. Users can search the database using disease names, drug names, target proteins, or genes and instantly retrieve detailed interaction information.
A key feature of the application is its interactive drug-target network visualization, which graphically represents the relationships between drugs and their molecular targets. This visualization helps users better understand complex biological interactions and supports exploratory research in drug discovery and precision medicine.
The backend provides RESTful APIs for secure communication between the frontend and the database. CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete) enable efficient data management, while optimized SQL queries ensure fast search performance and reliable retrieval of records. Amazon RDS provides scalable, secure, and highly available cloud-based database hosting.
Throughout the development process, emphasis was placed on data integrity, efficient database schema design, normalized relational tables, and responsive web design. The project also demonstrates practical implementation of cloud databases, backend development, database connectivity, and bioinformatics data management.

Installation
- Install Node.js, Git, and a modern web browser on your system.
- Clone the project repository from GitHub and install the required dependencies using
npm install. - Configure the Amazon RDS MySQL database by updating the database connection details in the project's environment configuration file.
- Start the application using
npm start, then open your browser and access the application through the provided local or deployed URL.
Usage
Open the Drug-Target Interaction Database in your web browser and navigate to the Database page. Enter a neurological disorder, drug name, target protein, or gene in the search box and click Search to retrieve relevant interaction data. The application displays detailed information, including drug-target relationships, binding affinity, interaction scores, and associated genes. Users can also explore interactive network visualizations and download results for further analysis. The platform is designed to provide fast, accurate, and user-friendly access to neurological drug-target interaction data for research and educational purposes.
System Requirements
The application requires a modern web browser such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari with a stable internet connection. It is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems. The backend runs on Node.js with Express.js, while the database is hosted on Amazon RDS MySQL. A minimum of 4 GB RAM and 500 MB of available storage is recommended for development and deployment.
